Requena: a land with a millenary wine tradition (Valencia)

In this tour we will discover one of the main areas of wine making in the Region of Valencia and we will taste a variety of wines with Utiel Requena DO, Spanish Denomination of Origin.
We will start the tour by visiting the agri-food cooperative COVIÑAS where the wine experts wil explain us all the procedures related to the elaboration and the aging of the wine. We will visit its facilities, the industrial unit and the bottling machine. We will be able the chance to see the wine cellar and taste different wines which have the seal of quality as an exclusive product of the region.
Afterwards we will have a cultural guided tour in the historic city center of Requena, declared Property of Cultural Interest. We will learn about the ‘Tower of the Hospedaje’, that was part of the old castle, we will look at some of the mansions of the nobility which were built by knights in the street of Saint Mary, the Alley of Paniagua, typical muslim neighbourhood of the town and the Palace of El Cid. We will enter in the Caves of the town which go all across the underground of the city and that were built by the Arabs.
At the end of the tour we will enjoy together a meal based on the traditional gastronomy of the region.

Agri-food Cooperative

Coviñas is an agri-food cooperative founded in 1965. Nowadays it exports 85% of its production to more than 25 countries. Some of the varieties of grapes Coviñas produces are: Bobal, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah.

Destination

The county Requena-Utiel is internationally knwon thanks to its quality wines.
More than one hundred wineries live from viticulture in the D.O. Utiel-Requena, and the culture of wine is the heart and soul of the region. It was an important strategic enclave during the Middle Ages. Its old town has been declared Property of Cultural Interest.
