Requena (Valencia)
Requena is a a city (population of 21.000) 68 kilometres far from the city of Valencia. Requena is the capital of the county Requena-Utiel which is very popular for its winemaking culture and tradition. Utiel Requena is a Spanish Denomination of Origin (DO) for wines located in this region concerning nine municipalities: Caudete de las Fuentes, Camporrobles, Fuenterrobles, Requena, Siete Aguas, Sinarcas, Utiel, Venta del Moro and Villargordo del Cabriel. More than one hundred wineries live from viticulture in the D.O. Utiel-Requena, and the culture of wine is the heart and soul of the region.
It was an important strategic enclave during the Middle Ages. Its old town has been declared Property of Cultural Interest.
Located in the high part of town, the old quarter of Requena following the same style as Hispano-Muslim towns. A visit around La Villa runs through narrow streets with houses bearing coats-of-arms, charming squares and typical houses decorated with tiles and elaborated ironwork. The castle was built by the Moors and, at present, is the house the Wine Harvest Festival Museum. The largest church in Requena, Santa María, and the church of El Salvador date to the 14th century and both have impressive Isabelline Gothic façades. It is home to examples of medieval architecture such as El Cid Palace and the San Nicolás Church.
Agri-food Cooperative
Coviñas is an agri-food cooperative founded in 1965. Nowadays it exports 85% of its production to more than 25 countries. Some of the varieties of grapes Coviñas produces are: Bobal, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah.
Tour
“Requena: a land with a millenary wine tradition”
We will start the tour by visiting the agri-food cooperative COVIÑAS where the wine experts will explain us all the procedures related to the elaboration/aging of the wine and we will enjoy a wine tasting. Later we will walk on a guided visit around the city center of Requena, declared Property of Cultural Interest. We will finish the tour with a meal based on traditional products.
